Volumetric facelift

As the face loses volume over time, it can appear thin and gaunt. A standard facelift alone may be less effective and result in a taut, stretched look. A new approach is the ‘volumetric’ facelift, which rejuvenates the face and restores fullness.

Fat is taken from the patient’s abdomen or the inside of the knees and excess oil and fluid is removed. Using small needles, the fat is then injected into the patient’s cheeks, chin and lips. Used with caution, it is possible to treat around the eyes.

Synthetic fillers such as collagen can be used. These tend not to be as successful because they are gradually broken down by the body. Using the patient’s own fatty tissue minimises complications associated with the insertion of foreign materials into the body.

As a low-risk procedure this technique is popular with patients with slight signs of ageing who do not want or need a full facelift. It is sometimes carried out alongside Botox or a chemical peel. Scars are very small and minimal and fade with time.

This procedure alone is not suitable for patients with excessive loose skin and jowling, and will need to be combined with a facelift to achieve desired results.

In smaller areas, the procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic and on an outpatient basis.
