Helping you with your decision
Your surgeon at Mybreast will spend time helping you choose the most appropriate breast implant in terms of size and shape.
My surgeon made me feel really confident and reassured me that the implants would keep my breasts looking very natural, fairly small and not huge. In the end I didn't have to spend too much time with the implant shape or size as I felt so confident with what my surgeon explained and showed me and the pictures that I saw on the Mybreast website.CM
He or she will take into account several factors including the shape of your existing breasts, the position of your nipples, your age, skin texture, and healing capacity. All these factors influence the choice of implant as well as the result of your surgery.
A vital part of selecting the right breast implants is based on your expectations. It is important that you discuss your expectations in detail with your Mybreast surgeon so you obtain a realistic and informed opinion.

Silicone or saline?
There are two types of implant filler available in the UK: silicone gel (semi-liquid or cohesive) and saline.
Silicone breast implants are preferred by surgeons and patients worldwide because of their shape, texture and longevity. They have less risk of ridges, and are designed to give a more natural, anatomical form to the breast than other breast implants.
Why silicone is preferred
Silicone was first used and approved for medical use as it causes very little reaction in human tissue. It is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and in many medical devices such as pacemakers, heart valves, and coatings for hypodermic needles.
Silicones are also found in puddings, cake mixes, soft drinks, lipsticks, body lotions, suntan creams, deodorants, hairsprays, bedding, clothing, tissues and baby-care products.
Silicone no longer leaks
The consistency of silicone provides a very natural feel to the breast. Modern breast implants contain silicone in a cohesive form, which is similar to jelly in consistency rather than in liquid form. This offers a natural feel and means that silicone cannot leak out of the implant the way it used to with old breast implants.

Saline implants have advantages too
Saline breast implants were initially developed because they could be inserted through a smaller incision. During the “silicone fear” period, they gained great popularity in the US. Problems with shape control, loss of volume over time, and rippling (visible wrinkles on the breast) have meant that they are now used in a minority of cases in the UK.
Saline breast implants have a slightly lower tendency to develop capsular contracture (hardening) around the breast implant. However, they have the disadvantage that saline is “slushy” in consistency, which only allows round implants as your choice of shape.
Alternatives to implants
Alternatives to breast implants are available. Pills that promise breast enlargement, suction devices, and other “natural” alternatives may be suitable for patients who wish to avoid implants, but you may be disappointed with the results. Recent interest in fat transfer from the same patient has identified it as a feasible but intensive and laborious method of small volume breast enlargement. In general, these techniques cannot as yet compare with the long-lasting, reliable volume and shape obtained with breast implantation.
Make an informed decision
As you can see above, there are advantages and disadvantages to both silicone and saline breast implants. At Mybreast we ensure that the final decision is ultimately yours, but we make sure you have all the information available to you so that the decision you make is an informed and educated one.
Other breast implants have so far failed to secure an important share of the market, because they perform less well or haven’t been fully tested yet.
