Is silicone safe?
Following a scare in the US in the 1980’s, thousands of women who had used silicone breast implants were studied to see whether a link existed between silicone breast implants and breast cancer or auto-immune (your body attacking itself) diseases. No link was found.
To date, silicone remains the safest prosthetic material in use in medicine. All prostheses, including hip / knee replacements, contain silicone, as well as replacement heart valves. Other implant filling materials have not fared so well, and most of them have been withdrawn from the market.
