Yes, during a breast reduction procedure your surgeon will also ensure your breasts are lifted to create a more shapely and comfortable size.

At your first appointment your surgeon will assess and discuss with you exactly what you are looking to achieve. As breast reduction surgery does involve the removal of breast tissue and skin, some scaring will occur however this will typically fade in time.

There are three types of technique used and your surgeon will tailor this to suit your needs.

The peri areolar technique
Scarring is limited to the circumference of the areola; this is suitable for smaller reductions.

The vertical scar technique
Here a scar is made around the areola and then extended down towards the breast crease, this is suitable for moderate reductions.

The ‘inverted T’ or ‘anchor’ technique
This is the most traditional form. The resulting scars will be around the areola, from the areola to the breast fold and along the breast fold. This is required for larger breast reductions.

Your surgeon and patient adviser will always provide you with information and guidance in order to ensure scaring is minimised.

Some patients can experience some discomfort following breast reduction surgery however this will be carefully managed with pain relief and by following our aftercare instructions.

 

Pregnancy and breast feeding can result in changes to your breast size and shape and for this reason it may be more suitable to consider this procedure after your family is complete. We understand that this may not be best for everyone and your surgeon will help guide you on what is right for you.

Our surgeons use the best techniques to increase the possibility of breast feeding after breast reduction surgery, however dependant on individual patient needs this cannot always be guaranteed.

One the day of your procedure, you will be welcomed by our friendly hospital team. Your dedicated nurse will take you to your private room where you will also see your surgeon and anaesthetist before your surgery.

We normally ask patients to arrive a few hours before their procedure takes place so observations can be taken to ensure you are fit and well and you are given time to relax and settle any nerves.

Breast reduction takes place using a general anaesthetist meaning you will be fully asleep during the procedure.

Once the procedure is complete, the recovery team will ensure you are fit and well before taking you back to your private room. Your post-surgical garment will be provided for you and will be in situ when you wake up. Many patients will stay overnight following their procedure however this will be assessed on a case by case basis by your surgeon in advance.

You will only be discharged once you are eating, drinking and medically fit enough to leave the hospital. It is important to have someone available to collect you from the hospital and stay with you for 24 hours following your surgery.

It is recommended that you take at least 2 weeks off of work to recover and use this time to relax and recuperate. You will be invited back during this 2 week period to see our clinic nurse a number of times where your dressings will changed and your progress assessed.

You will then see your surgeon around 6 weeks however this can sometimes happen sooner if needed.
