Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. Surgeons can perform liposuction alone or combine it with other procedures, such as the tummy tuck.

How is liposuction performed?
Surgeons may perform the procedure under general or local anaesthetic. You may return home the same day, but some patients require an overnight stay — depending on the type of anaesthetic used. We’ll discuss this with you before your liposuction procedure.
Generally, the surgeon will remove fat using a cannula (a hollow tube) and pass it into the fatty tissue through a small incision in the skin. They will then pass the cannula back and forth, removing fat with a suction machine.
On average, liposuction takes between one and a half and four hours, depending on the areas being treated and how much fat needs to be removed.

Types of liposuction techniques we use
Suction-assisted liposuction is the standard method used. The surgeon inserts a tiny straw-like cannula into the fatty tissue through a small incision. The cannula is attached to a vacuum device. The surgeon then carefully pushes the cannula through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and drawing them out of the body by suction.
PAL uses a specialised cannula with mechanised movement, so the surgeon doesn’t need to make as many manual movements. Otherwise, it’s similar to traditional liposuction.
No fluid injection is required in dry liposuction. It is rarely used and, when it is, only tends to be performed in tiny areas.
The surgeon injects a little local anaesthetic solution (less volume than the amount of fat to be removed) into the area, before carrying out the procedure.
The volume of fluid injected is the same as that of fat to be removed. Many plastic surgeons prefer this technique for high-volume liposuction.
The surgeon injects a large volume of solution into the subcutaneous fat for removal.

On the day
Our friendly hospital team will welcome you on the day of the procedure. Your dedicated nurse will take you to your private room, where you will also see your surgeon and anaesthetist before surgery.
We typically ask you to arrive a few hours before the procedure so we can check your overall health and ensure you have time to relax and settle any nerves.
Once you’re ready, we’ll administer the anaesthetic for your procedure and it can begin.
We’ll discuss what to expect so you can be confident in the liposuction process.
After the procedure
Once your procedure is complete, the recovery team will ensure you’re fit and well before returning to your private room. We’ll provide and apply your post-surgical compression garment to the treated area during the procedure.
We’ll only discharge you from the hospital once you’re eating and drinking and medically fit to leave. It is vital to have someone collect you from the hospital and stay with you for 24 hours following surgery.
Our experts recommend taking at least two weeks off work to recover. Use this time to relax and recuperate. We’ll invite you back during these two weeks to see our clinic nurse, who will remove your dressings and assess your progress.
You will then see your surgeon at around the six-week mark. However, this can sometimes happen sooner if needed.

It can take at least two weeks to recover from liposuction. You’ll also have a six-week checkup with your surgeon to ensure you have recovered fully and check your progress.
Liposuction cannot get rid of cellulite because it only removes fat. Cellulite is where fat protrudes through connective tissue and is much closer to the skin’s surface. The cannula cannot penetrate this closely, so cellulite removal is impossible.
In liposuction, we remove fat in litres. The highest, safest fat surgeons can remove is five litres of fatty tissue (around five kilograms).
Liposuction removes the fat cells in that area. If you lead a healthy lifestyle, then these fat cells should not return. However, if you gain significant weight, you can develop new fat cells in that area and reduce the effects of your treatment.
